Hello, beautiful! So, you've found your perfect wig from Myfirstwig. Now, how do you keep it looking just as fabulous? Proper washing and care are the secrets to a long-lasting, gorgeous wig.
Whether you have sleek straight hair, beachy waves, or bouncy curls, each texture has its own personality and needs. Don't worry — we've broken it all down into a simple, step-by-step guide. Let's dive in!
The Golden Rules Before You Begin
- Detangle First, Always: Gently comb your wig before getting it wet, starting from the ends and working up to the roots. Use your fingers or the tail of a comb.

- Cool Water is Key: Always use lukewarm or cool water. Hot water can damage the hair and loosen the cap construction.
- Gentle Products: Use sulphate-free, moisturising shampoos and conditioners.
Part 1: The Wash & Care Routine (For All Hair Types)
What You'll Need: A basin or sink, wig shampoo, wig conditioner, a wide-tooth comb, a soft towel, a wig stand, and optionally, glue remover (if you used adhesive last time).
Step 1: Prep & Adhesive Check
Before wetting the wig, gently detangle the hair from ends to roots.
Step 2: Remove Glue (if you used adhesive last time)
Method 1 – Apply glue remover to a cotton pad and press it onto the lace for 30 seconds to dissolve the adhesive, then wipe away from the hairline.
Method 2 – Add a few drops of a mild washing-up liquid (such as Dawn®) to a bowl of warm water. Submerge only the hairline section for approximately 15 minutes. After soaking, gently wipe away the glue with a soft cloth.

Step 3: Cleanse
Method 1 – Add shampoo to the water and swish to create a lather. Submerge the wig and gently massage the hair from roots to ends in a downward motion — no rough scrubbing! Leave it to soak for 3–5 minutes.
Method 2 – Fully wet the wig under cool running water. Turn off the tap, apply shampoo directly, and gently work it into a lather down the length of the hair. Leave for 3–5 minutes before rinsing.
Step 4: Rinse
Rinse thoroughly under a gentle stream of cool, running water until the water runs completely clear. Ensure all shampoo residue has been removed.

Step 5: Condition
Apply a generous amount of conditioner, focusing mainly on the mid-lengths and ends. Avoid the cap and roots to prevent loosening. Leave it on for 5–7 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
Step 6: Dry
Pat the wig gently with a towel to remove excess water — do not wring or twist! Place the wig on a wig stand to air dry completely, away from direct heat or sunlight.

Part 2: Tailored Styling & Definition
Once your wig is clean and damp, it's time for the magic that brings its texture back to life!
For Straight & Wavy Hair
- While the wig is still damp on the stand, gently detangle again with your wide-tooth comb.
- You can leave it to air dry naturally for a sleek finish. For a smoother result, use a low-heat blow dryer with a paddle brush, keeping the dryer moving at all times.
- Once dry, a light mist of shine spray or a serum applied to the ends can add extra polish.
For Curly Hair
- After the final rinse and towel pat, do not comb through the curls.
- Apply a curl-defining product. For the most defined, bouncy, and frizz-free curls, we highly recommend using a leave-in conditioner followed by a light-hold gel or curl-defining lotion.
- The Key Technique: Using your hands or a curl brush, scrunch the product upwards towards the roots. Leave the wig to air dry completely on its stand. As it dries, you can occasionally scrunch again to enhance the curl pattern.
- Once 100% dry, gently “scrunch out the crunch” from any gel cast with your hands, revealing soft, defined, and bouncy curls.

Pro Tips to Remember
- Less is More: Wash your wig every 15–20 wears, or when it begins to lose its bounce. Over-washing can shorten its lifespan.
- Storage is Everything: Always store your wig on a stand or mannequin head to maintain its shape and style.
Caring for your Myfirstwig is an act of self-love. By following these simple steps, you ensure that your confidence-boosting accessory stays vibrant, soft, and stunning — wear after wear.
